A deck that has gone grey and splintery does not need another coat over the top. It needs cleaning back to raw timber first, otherwise the new oil sits on the old finish and lifts the first time it rains.

What We Paint
Decks, pergolas, screens and fences.
Outdoor timber takes more punishment than anything else on a property. It gets walked on, rained on and sits in full sun, and unlike a wall it moves with the weather. That movement is exactly why a hard film cracks on it and an oil or a stain does not.
Which product we use depends on what you want from it. An oil keeps the grain visible and is easy to top up later. A solid stain or a paint gives you colour and covers timber that has already gone patchy.

Cleaning back is the whole trick.
With timber, almost all of the result comes from what happens before the oil or the stain goes anywhere near it.
- Cleaned back with a timber cleaner to lift grey and mill glaze
- Old flaking coatings stripped or sanded off
- Popped nails punched and loose boards refixed
- Timber left to dry to the right moisture level before coating
- Two coats minimum, with the end grain done properly
If a board is past saving we will tell you, rather than oiling over it and letting you find out next winter.
